Where do you find melanin in the body?

Melanin is primarily found within the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin. This pigment is produced by melanocytes, specialized cells located in the basal layer of the epidermis. Melanin plays a crucial role in determining skin color and protecting the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation by absorbing and scattering UV rays.

While there are melanocytes in hair follicles, the concentration and function of melanin are most prominent in the epidermis itself. It is responsible for the pigmentation observed on the skin surface and contributes significantly to the overall appearance of a person's complexion. The dermis and subcutaneous layer do not house melanin in the same way, as they contain different types of cells and structures that do not focus on pigmentation.
